In April 2010 Housing NSW, the Aboriginal Housing Office and 27 community housing providers across the State implemented a new housing application system known as Housing Pathways to make applying for housing assistance easier, simpler and fairer.
Applicants now fill out a single form to apply for properties managed by Housing NSW or participating community housing providers. They can choose either public or community housing but would maximise their opportunities for a housing offer if they register interest in both public and community housing.
A single statewide waiting list, the NSW Housing Register, has also been created under the Pathways initiative. It combines the waiting lists of Housing NSW and participating community housing providers and replaces the separate lists previously maintained. All new applications are logged on the NSW Housing Register.
Applicants on the NSW Housing Register can contact either a Housing NSW office or the office of one of the participating community housing providers to find out where their application is up to or change their personal details.
Housing Pathways brings Housing NSW and the community housing sector into a closer partnership which not only benefits clients but also reduces duplication and creates efficiencies from shared systems. For further information on Housing Pathways please see:
Community housing providers
Community housing provides affordable rental housing to around 18,000 households on low to moderate incomes across NSW. The NSW Government has made a commitment to grow community housing so there are 30,000 homes by 2016. The introduction of Housing Pathways means applicants will have more choice as they can apply for housing from different providers yet there will only be one application process.
There are currently 27 participating community housing providers and Housing NSW taking part in Housing Pathways. New community housing providers may enter the community housing sector if they are successful in tendering for properties being delivered under Stage 2 of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. Successful tenderers will be required to participate in the Housing Pathways.
Delivering real benefits
Under Housing Pathways, the public and community housing sectors are working together to create a social housing environment which benefits clients in the following ways:
- making better use of available social housing resources so demand and supply can be better matched
- providing greater transparency about the level of demand for different types of housing in different areas for strategic service planning
- reducing duplication between providers and for clients by using common systems
- providing more options to meet client needs as housing providers have greater access to a wider range of housing assistance products to better meet diverse client needs.
