Solar Hot Water Systems

Hot water systems are the biggest user of electricity in NSW homes. Housing NSW has a program to replace old electric hot water systems with more environmentally friendly alternatives such as solar and gas hot water systems. Environmentally friendly hot water systems will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save households money if they are run efficiently.

Housing NSW has prepared a brochure on solar hot water systems. The brochure helps Housing NSW households save money on their electricity bills by explaining electricity tariffs and how to use solar hot water systems efficiently.

Solar hot water systems use the sun’s energy to heat water. Water is stored in a tank on the ground and then pumped up to panels on the roof so that it can be heated by the sun. Solar hot water heaters have a boost element that operates on overcast days or at night time. The best way to get the most out of a solar hot water heater is to use hot water in the morning hours so that hot water doesn’t run out. Shower, wash dishes and clothes between 10am and 3pm. If the boost system is used often, because water needs to be heated in evening hours, the reduction in energy bills will be less.

If you have any problems with your solar hot water system, please contact the Housing Contact Centre on 1300 HOUSING (1300 468 746).
