Generally, an applicant must be at least 18 years of age before they can be considered for public housing. Housing NSW will consider applicants who are 16 or 17 years of age if:
- They meet all the general eligibility criteria for public housing, and
- They have their own income (either from Centrelink or wages).
In order to approve the application, Housing NSW must be satisfied that the young person will be able to successfully maintain the tenancy.
Housing NSW will provide Temporary Accommodation for young people aged between 16 and 17 years who meet all the general eligibility criteria for public housing if they are homeless and unable to find alternative accommodation.
Homeless children under 16 years are not eligible for Temporary Accommodation Assistance and are referred to the Department of Community Services.
