There are currently over 60,000 older people living in public and community housing across the State, and this number is expected to rise considerably over the next two decades. Older tenants have said that they want housing that is safe, secure, affordable, allows them to keep their links with family and friends, and also easily access the services they need.
Housing NSW currently provides a range of housing services for older people:
- priority for public housing
- construction of purpose built housing for older people. Properties may include hobless showers and grab rails, lever taps and enlarged light switches, with a proportion of units having fully modified kitchens and bathrooms.
- modification of existing housing for older people as their needs change
- partnerships with organisations to provide support services to help older people remain in their current home.
For more information about current housing options for older people see the Priority Housing fact sheet, Housing Assistance for Elderly Clients and Aboriginal People and Housing Assistance policy.
The NSW Government recently announced its initiative to address the housing needs of older people in NSW. Under the New Directions in Social Housing for Older People the amount of public housing available to older people will increase by 10% to around 30,000 dwellings.
