There are approximately 391 not-for-profit Community Housing organisations across NSW that provide housing assistance to clients who meet the Department's eligibility criteria.
Funding for providers
The primary source of funds for the community housing sector is the Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement. Through a variety of programs the Community Housing Division acquires properties that are then leased to housing providers to enable them to provide rental housing to people on low incomes and other people who are unable to access appropriate housing in the private market.
The Division's major funding programs include:
- long term community housing capital projects;
- allocations to community housing organisations to lease properties at market rent and sub-let to low-to-moderate income households at affordable rents;
- partnership projects in which organisations such as churches and local councils commit equity;
- acquiring, maintaining and upgrading properties for the Crisis Accommodation Program; and
- allocations through the Community Housing Resourcing Program for community housing infrastructure.
