The Community Housing Division (CHD) of Housing NSW, a Division of Family and Community Services, is the primary relationship and contract manager of community housing providers in NSW. The role of the CHD encompasses:
Strategy - CHD develops the strategic directions for the community housing sector, consistent with Housing NSW strategic priorities and the capacity of the sector. The CHD has a leadership role in the development of national community housing policy and influences Housing NSW's strategic housing policy development.
Planning - CHD has both a strategic program and a resource planning role. It sets the policy direction for asset management by the sector, in broad alignment with Government policies for public housing assets. This includes participation in strategic asset planning processes that look at the alignment of social housing assets to demand and supply.
Funding - CHD manages the allocation of assistance to providers, which may take the form of properties for management, ownership and/or grant funding the deliver more housing.
Contract Management - The legal relationship between CHD and community housing providers is managed through policy, guidelines, performance standards, funding agreements and leases. CHD develops corporate structures for contract and performance management and monitors compliance with funding agreements and contracts.
Property Asset Management - CHD manages contracts and quality assurance processes for asset management services.
The community housing sector in NSW is regulated by the Registrar of Community Housing.

National Regulatory System for Community Housing

A National Regulatory System for community housing is currently being developed. Public consultation on the proposed system was held in November and December 2011, the public submission period closed on 20 January 2012. The Community Housing Division of Housing NSW is delighted to be the 2011 winners of the Premier's Award for Devolving Decision Making.
CHD received the award for Planning for the Future: New directions for community housing, the strategy to grow and develop community housing in NSW for the period 2007/8 – 2012/13.
The Executive Director, Community Housing, Leonie King accepted the award on behalf of the team.“Receiving the award is a tribute to the hard work of a number of our staff who worked closely with the community housing sector to come up with a blueprint for a strong and viable future for social housing and to implement that Blueprint.
