In 2007, the NSW Government announced the expansion of the community housing sector under the strategy NSW Planning for the Future: Community Housing (PDF file, 2.2MB).
To help these organisations grow, Housing NSW is targeting the transfer of up to 3000 properties across NSW.
Community housing organisations vary in size from small organisations managing less than 50 properties to very large organisations that manage hundreds of properties across NSW. Community housing organisations work closely with local communities and services and are managed by Boards made up of representatives of those local communities. They can bring a different approach to the way properties and tenancies are managed. They can often respond more quickly to tenants’ needs and can be more flexible about how they apply policy and how they manage their staff and resources.
Property Transfer Program 2010
In 2009 under the Property Transfer Program, Housing NSW transferred the management of 1,258 public housing properties by December 2009 in selected locations across NSW to a local community housing provider that already operates in an area. The remaining properties are being transferred in 2010.
This is a way of growing community housing and will enable individual community housing associations to strengthen their financial position and attract investment to build more homes. For tenants who agree to transfer to community housing, there is the added advantage of having a local organisation working with and for them.
