The Australian Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, the NSW Government’s housing boost and Housing NSW’s normal supply program have created an opportunity for the private sector and the community sector to work with Housing NSW to deliver around 9,000 social housing properties by June 2012. In addition, repairs and maintenance for existing social housing will be fast-tracked.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to reshape the social housing property portfolio and to secure jobs and investment in NSW. The Economic Stimulus Plan will provide significant opportunities and stimulus to the building and construction industry and social housing will benefit from greater transparency and accountability, better economic and social participation for social housing residents and growth of community housing sector.
Stage One involves bringing forward for construction social housing dwellings which were already planned and approved. In this stage $226 million worth of redevelopments will need to be completed by June 2010. The majority of these homes will be transferred to the community housing sector in line with the NSW Government’s commitment to growing this sector.
Stage Two involves an Australian Government approved tender for new construction, including the spot purchase of house and land packages for use in social housing. The second stage, worth $1.5 billion, will require 75 percent of homes completed by December 2010. This task will be achieved by partnering with a range of external project management firms.
Housing NSW is working with the building and construction industry to deliver this extraordinary investment in the social housing sector.
