In June 1994, the NSW Government formed City West Housing Pty Ltd as a non-profit housing company to develop and manage affordable housing in the Ultimo/Pyrmont area of Sydney. The day-to-day operation of City West Housing is independent of government, operating under Corporations Law with an expertise-based board.
City West’s board members bring many years of management experience in relevant industries/disciplines to their task. Chairman, Barry Glover, has had more than 40 years experience in finance, community welfare, housing development and procurement, and asset management. He was at one time the Managing Director of Hooker Corporation Ltd Group.
City West Housing provides housing for people on very low-to-moderate incomes, who live and/or work in Ultimo/Pyrmont. These residents might otherwise be forced to move out of the area as a result of increasing prices due to commercial and residential development in inner Sydney. By providing an affordable housing alternative, City West Housing contributes to the maintenance of a socially diverse community in this inner city location.
City West Housing had developed and now manages 547 units of affordable housing.
City West Housing’s project, at 6-10 Wattle Street, provides 57 one, two and three bedroom apartments in an environmentally sustainable design.
City West Housing has responsibility for the development and management of these affordable housing properties, including:
- providing affordable housing to eligible tenants
- developing and maintaining a waiting list of applicants for the affordable housing
- property procurement, development, management, maintenance and rental risk
- financial self sufficiency
- regular reporting to an independent board of expert directors (none of whom are government employees)
- submitting an annual report and meeting all requirements under Corporations Law
- annual preparation of a three-year rolling business plan for approval by shareholders.
