The Centre for Affordable Housing has developed three demonstration projects in Sydney’s Inner West, West and North to demonstrate affordable rental housing can be financially viable.
Funding of $6.4 million was secured from the NSW Rental Bond Board to establish these Projects.
The three projects comprise 24 units of rental accommodation leased to low and moderate income earners in employment. The Centre for Affordable Housing leases the properties to community housing associations who are responsible for tenant selection and management, rent collection and arranging property maintenance.

Another focus of the Centre has been to promote and provide affordable housing for community services workers.
Communities need sufficient workers to carry out essential and, sometimes, specialised roles, such as childcare, aged care, community development, hospital duties, and other key services.
If affordable accommodation is not close to their work, they may be forced to leave their jobs, and the local community will experience shortages in essential services. |
Thornleigh, in Sydney’s North, has been identified as an area where community service workers experience difficulty in affording market rents. The Thornleigh Key Worker Affordable Housing Project provides six units of accommodation for fixed duration, medium-term rent to this group.
