Developing Affordable Housing

The demand for affordable housing in NSW is high and growing. A wide range of stakeholders are participating in the development of affordable housing, from state and local government, to charitable organisations, and increasingly private developers.

The Centre for Affordable Housing is able to assist those developing affordable housing. If you work within a local government authority, the Centre can assist you to develop strategies that can benefit your community by encouraging appropriate affordable housing.

If you are a developer, the Centre can assist you in assessing aspects of project feasibility, design and management options. Importantly, the Centre can bring together groups that might be interested in affordable housing, to bring about joint ventures or partnerships.

Affordable housing is not a new idea. For example, a number of councils have already moved to increase affordable housing in their area, through joint ventures, partnerships and planning instruments. Other projects have also been established which are specifically aimed at developing affordable housing, including joint ventures between state and local governments and private developers.

The State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009 is a key instrument which can be used by developers and local councils to facilitate affordable housing development.

The Centre for Affordable Housing has developed a fact sheet for developers of affordable housing.  The fact sheet outlines the requirements of managing affordable housing approved under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009.  The fact sheet is available for download below.
