  • Manly
  • North Sydney
  • Willoughby and
  • Warringah

Grants for construction of new boarding house accommodation

The Boarding House Financial Assistance Program provides grants of $10,000 per room to encourage the construction of new boarding houses or the addition of new rooms to existing premises. Grants will be paid out in equal annual instalments of $2,000 per room over five years. The accommodation will have to remain affordable for five years and successful applicants will be required to sign a Deed of Agreement with Housing NSW to this effect.

As a potential funding applicant you may test the eligibility of your project for this grant fund by completing the Expression of Interest application form and the Boarding House Calculator (see below).

This Expression of Interest form is interactive:

  • it summarises the key features of the funding program;
  • it outlines the process for lodging an application;
  • it determines the eligibility of a boarding house project for grant funding;
  • if eligible, it will indicate how much funding may be available for the project;
  • and it provides information on how the project will be assessed.

The Boarding House Calculator (Excel file, 110KB) is a simple way for you and Housing NSW to assess the viability of your boarding house development. It provides the option to incorporate the impact of the key subsidies available for new boarding houses, i.e. land tax exemption, the Boarding House Financial Assistance Program grants and the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS). Boarding house calculator guidelines 2010 (PDF file, 45KB) are also available to assist users of the calculator.

To apply for the funding, send all the pages of the completed application form, including the printed summary output page, as well as the completed boarding house calculator, to the Centre for Affordable Housing at Housing NSW.

You may send the documents via email if they are in a Portable Document Format (PDF) to boardinghouse@facs.nsw.gov.au

Or you may post printed copies to:

The Centre for Affordable Housing

Boarding House Financial Assistance Program
Locked Bag 4001, Ashfield BC 1800

For further information call the Centre for Affordable Housing at 02 8753 8181 or email the Centre at boardinghouse@facs.nsw.gov.au.

Please note that if your boarding house will provide accommodation for two or more people with a disability who require supervision and social habilitation, then you will have to apply for a licence to operate.
