Housing NSW has established a Social Housing Tenants Advisory Committee as a consultative mechanism that comprises of social housing tenants from across NSW.
In January 2008, the Social Housing Tenants Advisory Committee (SHTAC) was established as a one year pilot. The SHTAC meets four times a year in March, June, August and November 2008. At the end of this period, it will be evaluated to determine its future status and direction.
What does the Committee do?
The SHTAC’s role is to provide feedback and comment to Housing NSW on matters that help to improve policies, operations and service delivery to increase tenant satisfaction with Housing NSW services.
The Committee is made up of 12 social housing residents that reside in public, community and Aboriginal housing. Committee members are volunteers, committed to working towards achieving a better future for the community. They offer advice to Housing NSW based on their individual knowledge and experience as a social housing tenant.
Housing NSW does not expect SHTAC members to formally represent social housing tenants’ views on the Committee and /or to report back to social housing tenants on Committee business.
Housing NSW recognises the importance of supporting the SHTAC in its work. A Housing NSW Secretariat as been established for this purpose. The Secretariat assists the membership by providing coordination and logistical support. The Secretariat also serves as a communication channel between the Committee and the broader community, including social housing residents and other stakeholders. It promotes the work, priorities and achievements of the Committee and refers systematic issues facing social housing tenants to the Committee’s attention, as these arise.
Leadership and Training Program
Committee members are required to participate in a Leadership and Training Program that runs concurrently to quarterly Committee meetings.
The Leadership and Training Program is designed to build leadership skills and to support the Committee with practical and appropriate training to assist them in their work. The training primarily focuses on increasing the members’ negotiation and communication skills, in broadening their capacity to understand and deal with change and building skills in dealing with group dynamics and managing conflict.
