After a motor vehicle accident in 2001, Morgan Harrison was confined to a wheelchair. He spent much of his own money installing ramps and modifying the unit he used to rent in the private market. He also had to cover the cost of removing those modifications when he moved out.
In April 2006, Morgan moved into an Office of Community Housing unit in Urara Street, Yamba. This unit is especially modified to meet his needs, with remote keyless entry, a reverse cycle air conditioner and a customised kitchen allowing for wheelchair access. Ramps, grab rails and a modified bathroom with no-slip flooring also feature.
“This unit is more spacious and with the modifications already done, I don’t have to worry about changing anything,” Morgan said.
The unit is close to the Yamba town centre and allows easy access for support workers who deliver his meals and help him with everyday chores such as bathing and exercise.
The unit is managed by Anglicare North Coast, ensuring Morgan has support and can communicate readily with the Department.
Morgan says he is happy to be in long-term secure housing because the private rental market is unpredictable and costly, especially for someone in his situation.
