Case study - Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative

John’s story

John* lives with schizophrenia and had spent lengthy periods in hospital. He also battled alcohol and drug problems. His illness, and his drug and alcohol problems, made it almost impossible for him to maintain a tenancy. He could not pay his rent and had frequent problems with his neighbours.

After joining the HASI program in 2004, John got the support and help he needed. Through HASI, he has been in stable community housing accommodation for two and a half years; he is looking after his property and paying the rent.

With a stable tenancy and ongoing assistance from support groups in his local area, as well as clinical support from his Area Mental Health Service, John’s mental and physical health has vastly improved.

He has had only one hospital admission since joining the program. He is now socially active and works on a casual basis.

HASI has enabled people with complex needs to improve their lives by providing the support and reassurance they require.
