Case study - Aboriginal Reference Group

A member* of the Aboriginal Reference Group (ARG) joined the Department six years ago and has worked her way up to senior client service officer. She joined the ARG in 2003 because she wanted to “be more hands on, involved with what’s
happening within the Department, the what, when, why and how of our Policies and Procedures.”

She wanted to contribute to Policy and Procedure and best practice service delivery to Aboriginal people.

“I also considered this because it could provide a great career development opportunity and help me network with like-minded individuals within the Department,” she said.

Since joining the ARG, she has been able to meet people that she says she would not ordinarily liaise with within and outside of the Department.

“I have been involved in Project management training, where in my normal position, this may not have occurred. I have been able to bring this and other training back to my local office and put to effective use. As a Senior Client Service Officer (Aboriginal Specialist), the ARG has provided invaluable support to my personal and professional development,” she explained.

She says she enjoys being a part of such a diverse group of Departmental employees from all over the state and contributing to the way the Department services Aboriginal clients.
