Case Study - The Signpost (Hunter Region)

One of the many benefits of intensive case management for homeless people with complex needs, is that support workers are often able to assist people who are homeless to link up with services that can improve their housing outcomes.

A young couple that was living in a caravan park were referred to the Signpost by the Caravan Project of the Family Action Centre. The young woman, who was pregnant at the time, was the main carer for her boyfriend who has epilepsy and schizophrenia.

The Signpost worker was able to secure priority housing for the couple and continued to work with them during the pregnancy and after the baby’s birth. The Signpost worker linked the young woman to the Early Childhood Centre and has worked with the couple on budgeting and other issues. The young woman commented:

“Now we have the privacy of our own home and we don’t have to go outside in the rain or hot weather to have a shower. Life is much better – we have a three bedroom house and a baby, and I always budget so we have more spare money.”
