Antisocial Behaviour Strategy

Housing NSW is committed to working in partnership to build and maintain communities. The Antisocial Behaviour Strategy aims to do this by improving community safety and strengthening how we respond to antisocial behaviour.

The Antisocial Behaviour Strategy emphasises support, prevention and early intervention. It includes:

  1. new and revised policies and procedures in relation to Housing NSW’s response to antisocial behaviour
  2. strengthening the Memorandum of Understanding with NSW Police
  3. improved procedures for using mediation services and
  4. expansion of safety audits within public housing.

Housing NSW conducted two trials to implement initiatives to manage complex nuisance and annoyance cases. Following these pilots, a strategy for managing nuisance and annoyance and antisocial behaviour was developed and specialist positions were created.

In June 2007, 19 Senior Client Service Officers (Antisocial Behaviour) were appointed across the state to:

  • support client service staff to manage antisocial behaviour
  • develop stronger links and partnerships with government and non-government agencies to support tenants
  • work with tenant groups on tenant and landlord obligations in relation to antisocial behaviour
  • develop systems for recording and monitoring antisocial behaviour
  • assist staff to take appropriate action to terminate a tenancy where tenants seriously and/or persistently engage in antisocial behaviour.

Fact sheets relating to antisocial behaviour available on this website include:

  • Being a Good Neighbour in Your New Home
  • Problems with nuisance and annoyance
  • Problems with Noise
  • Problems with Harassment
  •

Housing NSW is now entering the consolidation phase of the strategy which will focus on:

    • reviewing and updating policies, procedures and templates
    • improving how we report about nuisance and annoyance
    • evaluating the effectiveness of the 19 Senior Client Service Officer (Antisocial Behaviour) positions
    • finalising the Memorandum of Understanding with NSW Police.
