Young achievers in social housing to be recognised during National Youth Week 2008

Monday 31 March 2008

The contribution made by young people living in social housing will be recognised in an awards ceremony to be held at The Powerhouse Museum during National Youth Week 2008.

Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW will present the Housing NSW 2007 Youth Achievement Awards on Tuesday 8 April 2008.

The awards will acknowledge and congratulate 21 young achievers from across NSW living in social housing.

This is the second year of the awards ceremony which includes ten grand finalists who have succeeded beyond their expectations in six categories.

The Youth Achievement Awards congratulate outstanding young people who have made a significant contribution to their community under six categories:

• Academic
• Chosen Career
• Arts and Culture
• Community Service
• Sports
• Special Achievement.

Housing NSW is a large supporter of its tenants and by hosting these awards it is an opportunity to show that we provide much more than shelter, we also help create a sense of community.

Too often social housing is seen in a less than positive light and these awards will prove this stereotype wrong with 21 young people set to accept awards in April.

Nominations for the awards in 2007 were overwhelming, with nominations received for young Aboriginal people and young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
