Minister for Housing Matt Brown and Member for Cabramatta Reba Meagher, today met local residents and inspected new housing models for the $733 million Bonnyrigg redevelopment. The redevelopment aims to renew the suburb, create new jobs and attract more investment to the area.
As the population grows, there is a need to create a greater social mix of public and private housing in Bonnyrigg. The redevelopment will house more than 7,100 residents by its completion in 2021, more than double the current population of the 81 hectare Bonnyrigg estate.
The ratio of private to public housing will be increased from 10 per cent to 70 per cent.
The work between the Iemma Government and Bonnyrigg Partnerships will ensure there will be the same amount of public housing then as there is now.
The redevelopment includes enough public homes for former tenants who wish to stay in the area and will create an additional 4,000 jobs for local residents and others, not including traineeships and apprenticeships.
Thousands of Bonnyrigg residents were consulted in meetings about the project, to make sure the redevelopment could preserve the best elements of their community, while addressing problems such as poor security and lack of community facilities.
The redevelopment aims to design better homes, improve the road networks, build parks and create more open space.
Concept plans are set to be lodged with Fairfield Council later this year. The first new homes are expected to be completed in late 2009.
