The 1990s

  • The Department of Housing focused on public housing following Mant report
  • The Neighbourhood Improvement Program (later renamed Community Renewal/ Regeneration) commenced
  • The Department sought housing solutions in the private and rental markets using innovations, such as headleasing and partnerships with private developers and community housing groups
  • The stock of community housing doubled
  • The targeting of housing assistance to those in priority need increased in response to continued reduction in Federal funding
  • Major investment in the Department’s housing stock with substantial effort to bring stock up to standard
