The 1930s

• 1934 the Government established the "Homes for the Unemployed trust" to assist the unemployed to erect crude, simple dwellings for their families
  
• The Housing Improvement Act of 1936 and 1937 led to 56 brick home units being built at Erskineville, which were let to low-income families for $1. 90 a week. This move heralded the return of the State Government into the housing construction field.
  
• By the outbreak of World War II in 1939, a survey showed that Australia was in desperate need of 120,000 houses, with the majority required in NSW.
