Community Spirit Amongst Public Housing Seniors (June 2005)

Alan Jones, host of 2GB’s breakfast show, joined forces with the Minister for Housing Joe Tripodi, to congratulate Senior public housing residents on their contribution to their local communities, at the 2005 NSW Department of Housing Seniors’ Achievement Awards.

Both Alan Jones and the Minister commended the outstanding contribution made to community by residents at a ceremony that took place at Parliament House.

Yesterday on his radio program, Alan Jones named and congratulated all the winners of the Senior Awards, and paid tribute to their dedication and efforts to the community.

The awards were open to all public housing residents aged 60 years of age, or older, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and people with a lifelong disability over the age of 50 years.  100 nominations were received from across the state and four Seniors were recognised in each the Department’s four divisions.

With 17% of the public housing demographic made up of Seniors the NSW Government wanted to officially recognise the talent, wisdom and achievements of it's senior public housing residents.

Many of the Senior Achievers recognised at the ceremony have faced their own challenges in life, yet work selflessly and tirelessly for their friends, neighbours and community.

The award winning Seniors are as follows:

Central Sydney – Joy Ross, Surry Hills and Gladys Smit, Croydon Park

Greater Western Sydney – Gloria Mathews, Lethbridge Park and James Maynard, Tregear

Southern and Western NSW – Mary Goodman, Bellambi and Judith Mallon, Bellambi
