The Housing NSW manages properties owned by the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders wishing to apply for a tenancy can obtain an application form from Housing NSW.
The Housing NSW will consider priority applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people if they are:
As Housing NSW properties become available we will check whether the property is suitable for clients from these priority groups. For example, we will check whether they have special dwelling needs, or if a Local Allocation Strategy applies which means the client cannot be housed there. If the property is not suitable, we will allocate the property to the next client on the Housing Register whose housing needs would be met by the property.
Like all other tenants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tenants are entitled to apply to have their tenancy transferred to another household member. There are rules relating to Succession of Tenancy applications for AHO properties. If the property was originally an Aboriginal Welfare Board dwelling, preference will be given to the descendants of the original tenant.
